Even better is vacuuming every surface and crevice of your project with a shop vacuum fitted with a good quality filter designed to trap the microscopic dust.

Sanding a wood deck provides a clean smooth surface and removes any splinters or rough patches. Instead use a tack cloth a sticky piece of cheesecloth made especially for this purpose. Fine sandpaper 220-grit is used for a second sanding.

By any chance if any oily substance sticks with the wood mineral spirits can help to remove it. Sanding can also help remove old paints or colors left on woodwork. After stripping paint to properly clean the wooden surface use mineral spirits and fine steel wool.
