Hi Valerie unfortunately it probably wont change the colour of a dark stain without first sanding.
How to refinish wood dresser without sanding. Ensure all roughness is gone. Use wax to refinish your dresser if it has an interesting texture or color. After cleaning and removing any dirt I gave it a very light scuff sand with a high grit sandpaper.
Use a drop cloth for easier clean up. If you dont want to sand you can get a really pretty looking wood-look finish with a light paint base and Fusions Stain Finishing Oil on top. You just use your wood-burning tool to heat up the burn in stick so that little melted drops drip off.
I then wiped it down and applied the first coat of the gel stain. I like to use TSP which is a heavy duty cleaner. Using a palm sander start with medium grit sanding pad and adjust as needed.
When all stainpaint is removed move to finer grit sanding pad for smooth finish. This leaves your piece with a clean finish so. TIP Use a good brush or foam brush a light hand with enough product that it doesnt pull and drag.
Gently sand the surface with 400-600 grit sandpaper or extra fine steel wool. Finish by washing down the dresser and letting it dry out. Too little and it can look splotchy.
A scuff sand is just lightly going over the wood just enough to create dust but not to dig deep into the wood. Purchase a container of furniture wax beeswax or a similar wax finish. Then use the tip of your hot tool to make sure the melted liquid is in the gouge making sure to tap it with your tool to get rid of any air bubbles.
